What changed for Chilean shoppers in 2025
The rule you remember no longer exists
Until October 2025 an international purchase under US$41 entered Chile free of VAT and duty, and more than nine out of ten parcels used that band. It is gone.
Where the VAT is collected depends on the shop
For purchases up to US$500 on platforms registered with the SII, the 19% is charged at checkout. European shops are generally not registered, so the tax is settled when the shipment enters instead. Neither is cheaper — but only one of them surprises you at the door.
The catalogues you want are closed to you
Zalando sells only in Europe, PcComponentes only across the EU, MediaMarkt Spain only in mainland Spain and the Balearics. None of them offers a Chilean address at checkout.

Chile after the US$41 exemption (2026)
Until October 2025 an international purchase under US$41 entered Chile free of VAT and duty, and the customs service counted more than fifty million such parcels in a single year — over nine out of ten of everything arriving. On 25 October 2025 that exemption was eliminated. Today every international purchase is subject to 19% VAT, whatever it cost.
How the VAT reaches you depends on where you bought. For purchases up to US$500 on platforms registered with the Servicio de Impuestos Internos, the platform charges the 19% at checkout and the parcel is not charged again at the border.
Whether the shop you are buying from is on that register is worth checking before you order: if it is not, the tax is settled when the shipment enters the country instead. Neither route is cheaper — what changes is when you pay and who collects it.
Above US$500 the shipment leaves the simplified treatment and clears normally, where ad valorem duty can apply on top of the VAT. Chile has trade agreements with the European Union, the United States, China and Türkiye among others, and their preferences can reduce that duty where the origin of the goods is properly evidenced at clearance.
One pleasant technical note if you buy Spanish electricals: Chilean mains run at 220 V and 50 Hz, which is close enough to Spain's 230 V and 50 Hz that Spanish appliances generally work as designed. The difference you face is the plug, not the electricity.

Forwarding packages to Chile
No. The US$41 exemption was eliminated on 25 October 2025, and every international purchase is now subject to 19% VAT regardless of value.
Because platforms registered with the SII collect the 19% at the point of sale on purchases up to US$500. Shops that are not registered do not, so the tax is settled when your shipment enters Chile instead.
They do not touch VAT, which is due either way. What they can affect is customs duty on shipments that clear ordinarily, and only when the origin of the goods is properly evidenced.
Usually yes, and Chile is unusual in that. Chilean mains are 220 V at 50 Hz against Spain's 230 V at 50 Hz, so the real difference is the plug shape. Read the rating plate anyway.
