What makes importing into Mexico more expensive than people expect
Origin is not the same as the shop's country
The US$50 exemption and the 17% and 19% rates apply to goods originating in a T-MEC country. A US-bought item manufactured in Asia is not of T-MEC origin, and neither is anything from Europe, China or Türkiye.
The general rate went to 33.5%
Since 15 August 2025, rule 3.7.35 sets the global rate for the simplified courier procedure at 33.5% on shipments below US$2,500. That is what a non-T-MEC parcel meets by default.
The shops you want deliver at home only

What decides your bill in Mexico: the origin of the goods (2026)
Almost every guide repeats the same three numbers — US$50 free, then 17%, then 19% — and almost none mentions the condition attached: those bands are for goods **originating** in the T-MEC countries, the United States and Canada. Origin is about where the goods were made, not where you happened to buy them, so a US purchase of an item manufactured in Asia does not qualify either.
Since 15 August 2025, rule 3.7.35 of the Reglas Generales de Comercio Exterior sets the general global rate for the simplified courier procedure at 33.5% on shipments below US$2,500. That is the rate a European, Chinese or Turkish parcel meets by default.
Mexico does have an agreement with the European Union — the TLCUEM — and European-origin goods can qualify for preferential treatment, but that lives in a formal import with a valid origin declaration, not in the courier lane. There is also a fixed DTA processing fee per shipment, whatever the value.
What we can honestly do about it is narrow: you declare contents and values in your customs proforma, our team checks that declaration against what is actually in the box before it ships, and we quote the freight exactly. Nobody can quote you the final figure in advance, because classification and regime are decided at the border.

Forwarding packages to Mexico
Only if the goods themselves originate in the United States or Canada. That is about where they were made, not where you bought them — so a European, Chinese or Turkish parcel does not qualify, and neither does a US purchase of goods manufactured elsewhere.
It can, but not automatically and not in the courier lane. The TLCUEM preference applies in a formal import supported by a valid origin declaration, which you arrange with a customs agent. A forwarder cannot claim it for you.
No, and be wary of anyone who says they can. The final figure depends on classification, origin evidence and the clearance regime. What we can price exactly is the freight.
Sometimes, and only when the goods are genuinely US-made, because that is what the T-MEC bands look at. Check the label rather than the shop's flag.
