Bershka uses EU numeric sizing, and it matters here because the brand is cut for a young body and runs small and narrow — worst on the denim (often low-stretch) and slim trousers, truer on knitwear and oversized fits. Customs & import duty: EU to the United Kingdom
Here is the version most forwarders won't tell you. The UK has a single number that controls everything: GBP 135 per consignment, measured on the goods value alone (shipping and insurance don't count). At or below GBP 135, there is no customs duty, and the overseas seller charges 20% UK VAT at checkout.
Above GBP 135, the carrier collects import VAT (and any duty) when it delivers and adds a handling fee. Note the dates: the GBP 135 duty relief is still in force today — its abolition was announced in the Autumn Budget 2025 but is future-dated 'by March 2029 at the latest,' so it does not apply now.
There is no VAT-free threshold for commercial goods: above GBP 135 the 20% import VAT is charged on the full value, not just the part over GBP 135. Only genuine person-to-person gifts up to GBP 39 are VAT-free.
Duty itself is often 0% on EU-origin goods: under the UK-EU trade agreement (TCA), a valid statement of origin gets you 0% duty. Without it, standard MFN rates apply — roughly 12% on clothing, 8% on footwear, 2% on leather goods — while perfume, cosmetics, phones and laptops are 0% anyway.
One caveat we won't sugarcoat: shipping to an EU forwarding address counts as a domestic EU sale, so EU VAT is charged and a private buyer generally cannot reclaim it. The tourist refund requires you to personally export the goods with a customs stamp — a forwarder cannot do that for you.

VAT and the real price advantage (no VAT refund via forwarding)
Let's be straight about tax. Spain charges 21% VAT, and a price on bershka.com/es already includes that Spanish VAT. When you ship to a forwarder address inside the EU, the order is treated as a domestic EU sale, so EU VAT is charged — and a private consumer generally cannot reclaim it.
The tourist (tax-free) refund scheme requires you to personally export the goods and get a customs stamp on your way out of the EU, and a forwarder cannot do that on your behalf. So we will never promise you a VAT refund through forwarding.
Separately, the UK charges its own 20% import VAT when the goods arrive, and the £135 consignment value sets where that VAT is collected: on consignments of goods valued at £135 or less, the overseas seller charges 20% UK VAT at checkout (and there is no customs duty at that level); above £135, the carrier collects 20% UK import VAT — plus any duty — on delivery and adds a handling fee.

Here's a dated, illustrative landed-cost build for a typical Bershka basket as of 13 June 2026. Say you order two pairs of super-baggy jeans (~€29.99 each = €59.98), an oversized hoodie (~€27.99) and two graphic tees (~€17.99 each = €35.98) — about €123.95 of goods, with Spanish VAT already included in those euro prices. At roughly €1 = £0.86 that's about £106.60 of goods value, and the basket packs to around 2 kg — an easy single forwarded parcel.
The key UK rule is the £135 consignment threshold (goods value only, excluding shipping and insurance). Because £106.60 is at or below £135, the overseas seller charges 20% UK VAT at checkout, there is NO customs duty, and the carrier adds no import-VAT handling fee on delivery — the cleanest scenario.
On top of the goods you pay one international forwarding leg (lighter and cheaper if you consolidate several orders into one box). If a bigger haul pushes the goods value ABOVE £135, the picture changes: the carrier then collects 20% UK import VAT on delivery, plus any customs duty, plus a handling fee.
