Import collectibles and publishing
from Europe to Canada

Delivery illustration

Europe is where the language editions, the regional exclusives and the deep backlist live — and for a hobby shop, comic store or specialist retailer, that catalogue is the whole reason to buy at origin instead of waiting for a local distributor. Under CETA, goods of EU origin can enter Canada at 0% duty when the supplier puts the origin declaration on the invoice — and the CAD 150 threshold most guides quote does not apply to European goods at all.

The problem

Buying collectibles in Europe is easy. Getting it to Canada is the part that breaks.

🗣️

The Spanish and Portuguese editions are printed in Europe

For a retailer in Latin America the Spanish edition printed in Spain or the Portuguese edition printed in Portugal is often the version customers want, and it reaches the local market late, in small quantities or not at all.

📦

Distribution gaps are structural, not temporary

Regional exclusives, limited runs and backlist titles are decided by distribution agreements you do not control. Buying at origin turns a gap you have been waiting on into stock you can put on a shelf.

⚠️

The threshold most guides quote is the wrong one

The widely repeated CAD 150 duty / CAD 40 tax courier thresholds come from CUSMA and apply to shipments from the US and Mexico. For goods arriving from Europe the de minimis is CAD 20. Costing a European import on the CUSMA numbers understates what you will actually be charged.

What is genuinely worth sourcing in Europe

Start with language, because it is the one advantage no local distributor can undercut. Spanish-language editions printed in Spain and Portuguese editions printed in Portugal are frequently the versions your customers actually want, and they arrive in Latin American markets late, in small allocations or never. Publishers like Norma Editorial, Planeta Cómic and Devir, and the Franco-Belgian houses behind the bande dessinée catalogue, sit at the centre of that. Add Taschen for art and photography books, whose formats and editions are a European proposition first.

The second axis is the hobby trade. Games Workshop's Warhammer ranges, Asmodee's board game catalogue, LEGO's European assortment, Panini's collections, model kits from Italeri and Revell, EU pressings on vinyl and European print runs of trading cards all carry regional exclusives and edition differences that make a specialist shop's window look different from everyone else's. Third, the backlist: European stock persists on titles and references that are out of print or unavailable in your market, which is often where the margin is for a specialist retailer. Commercial terms are between you and each publisher or distributor — trade accounts, minimum orders and territorial agreements are theirs to set. What we do is receive from all of them into one address and send you one shipment.

  • Spanish editions printed in Spain and Portuguese editions printed in Portugal — the version LatAm customers ask for
  • Franco-Belgian bande dessinée and European comics publishers: Norma Editorial, Planeta Cómic, and the BD houses
  • Hobby trade: Warhammer ranges, Asmodee board games, LEGO's European assortment, Panini collections
  • Model kits (Italeri, Revell), EU vinyl pressings and European trading-card print runs with regional variants
  • Backlist and out-of-print stock that no longer exists in your market — often the best margin in the category
  • Trade terms, minimum orders and territorial agreements are set by each publisher, not by us

Publisher and brand names are listed as European sourcing options, reviewed August 2026. Resendify is not a distributor and does not grant, verify or represent distribution or resale rights for any publisher or brand — those agreements are between you and the rights holder.

Importing into Canada from Europe: CETA, the CAD 20 reality and your BN

Two facts decide most of the cost. First, the de minimis that applies to European shipments is CAD 20, not the CAD 150 duty / CAD 40 tax figures that dominate search results — those come from CUSMA and cover courier shipments from the United States and Mexico. Using them to cost a European import is the single most common planning error we see. Second, and much more useful, CETA means goods of genuine EU origin can enter at 0% duty when the exporter includes the CETA origin declaration on the invoice. Without that declaration your broker falls back to MFN — roughly 16–18% on clothing, 16–20% on footwear, 8–11% on leather goods, and usually 0% on electronics and cosmetics — so the declaration is worth more than any freight negotiation you will have this year.

On tax, GST is 5% federally with provincial sales tax on top depending on the province of the importer, so the combined rate lands between 5% and 15%. GST/HST registrants generally recover import GST as an input tax credit. To import commercially you need a Business Number with an import/export (RM) account, and a customs broker is normal practice. We handle the European side: consolidation, commercial invoice, packing list, and chasing your suppliers for the CETA origin wording before the goods move.

  • De minimis for European shipments is CAD 20 — the CAD 150 / CAD 40 figures are CUSMA (US and Mexico only)
  • CETA: 0% duty on genuine EU-origin goods with the origin declaration on the supplier's invoice
  • Without the declaration: MFN — roughly 16–18% clothing, 16–20% footwear, 8–11% leather goods, ~0% electronics
  • GST 5% plus provincial tax: 5%–15% combined depending on the importer's province
  • A Business Number with an import/export account is required to import commercially

Weight, condition and the one tax rule worth knowing

Two operational realities shape this category. The first is weight: paper is dense, and a pallet of books or a case of hardbacks costs far more to move than its volume suggests. That pushes you towards larger, less frequent consignments and towards sea freight where your replenishment cycle can absorb the transit — which is a planning decision, not something we can fix with a better rate. The second is condition. Collectibles are sold on condition, so a corner crushed in transit is a markdown or a return. We repack for protection where the original packaging is not up to an international leg, and we will photograph condition on arrival if you ask, so that a claim starts from evidence rather than memory.

There is also one tax rule genuinely worth knowing, because it changes the arithmetic more than anything on this page: in Brazil, books, newspapers and periodicals — and the paper used to print them — enjoy constitutional tax immunity. That does not automatically make every shipment free of every charge, and it does not extend to games, miniatures or toys, but for a bookshop importing printed matter into Brazil it is a materially different calculation from importing collectible figures. Confirm the treatment of your specific goods with your despachante; it is the first thing we would check in your position.

  • Paper is dense: books and printed matter reward larger, less frequent consignments
  • Sea freight often makes sense here if your replenishment cycle can absorb the transit
  • Collectibles sell on condition — we repack for protection when original packaging is not up to the trip
  • Condition photos on arrival on request, so a claim starts from evidence
  • Brazil: books, newspapers and periodicals have constitutional tax immunity — a materially different calculation from figures and games
  • Sets, boxed games and miniatures are volumetric rather than heavy — mixing them with books balances a shipment

General operational guidance, reviewed August 2026 — not tax or customs advice. The Brazilian immunity applies to printed matter as defined in law and does not cover every product a shop sells; confirm the treatment of your specific goods with your customs agent before you plan around it.

What Resendify does for a business, and what it does not

Being precise about the boundary is more useful than a list of promises. We operate receiving warehouses across ten countries — Spain, Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Türkiye, the Czech Republic, the United States, China and Hong Kong — so your suppliers deliver domestically, which is what most of them are set up to do. We check goods in, store them while an order builds across several suppliers, repack when the original packaging is not built for an international leg, consolidate into one shipment, and produce the export documentation: commercial invoice, packing list, real weights and dimensions, and the supplier origin documents that decide whether you pay a preferential duty rate or a full one.

What we are not is your customs broker in the destination country, a distributor, or a party to your trade terms. We do not clear goods on your behalf at destination, we do not hold stock we sell you, and we do not negotiate or guarantee terms with brands. We also do not quote transit times we cannot control, and we do not tell you your goods will clear without charges. The Business plan exists precisely because a recurring importer needs a quote-based setup rather than a consumer membership: tailored workflows for repeat imports, room for packaging and repacking, volume-oriented planning and commercial support on request.

  • Receiving warehouses in 10 countries so suppliers deliver domestically
  • Check-in, storage while an order builds, and repacking for the international leg
  • Consolidation into one shipment with commercial invoice, packing list, weights and dimensions
  • We chase supplier origin declarations — the document that decides preferential duty
  • We are not your destination customs broker, not a distributor, and not a party to your trade terms
  • Business plan is quote-based: tailored workflows for repeat imports, volume-oriented planning

FAQ

Importing collectibles to Canada: questions companies ask

No, and anyone promising that is overselling. Trade accounts, minimum orders and territorial agreements are set by each publisher or distributor and negotiated directly with you. What we provide is the European address those suppliers can deliver to, storage while an order builds across several of them, and one consolidated shipment to your country with the documentation your broker needs.

We repack when the original packaging is not built for an international leg — publisher cartons often are not — and we can add protective material for boxed sets, sleeved cards and miniatures. On request we photograph condition on arrival at our warehouse, which matters because it establishes where damage happened. We do not grade cards or authenticate collectibles; that is a specialist service and not something we would pretend to offer.

Not on goods arriving from Europe. The CAD 150 duty and CAD 40 tax courier thresholds were created under CUSMA and apply to shipments from the United States and Mexico. European shipments fall under the CAD 20 de minimis, which in practice means a commercial consignment is always assessed. Any supplier or forwarder quoting you the CUSMA numbers for a European order has the wrong regime.

On apparel it is the difference between 0% and roughly 16–18% of the invoice value; on footwear, between 0% and 16–20%. On electronics it is often worth nothing because MFN is already 0%. That is why we ask for the wording per supplier during intake rather than treating it as paperwork to sort out later — after the goods ship, fixing it is slow and sometimes impossible.

Volume and rhythm change what you need. A consumer account is built around occasional parcels; a business buying every month needs storage that fits a build-up across suppliers, packing decisions made per shipment, documentation that a customs agent can file without chasing you, and a quote rather than a fixed membership. That is what the Business plan is for, and it is priced per case because a pallet of tools every month and a monthly box of collectibles are not the same operation.

No. Clearance at destination is done by you or your customs broker, and that is deliberate: local clearance requires local licensing and local liability. What we do is the European side and the paperwork that makes clearance straightforward — a consolidated shipment, a commercial invoice that matches the goods, a packing list, real weights and dimensions and the supplier's origin documents.

Talk to us about the specific supplier before you plan around it. Some situations are simply a delivery address problem, which your European address solves outright. Others involve trade accounts or territorial agreements that are between you and the brand, and no forwarder can resolve those — we would rather tell you which one you are facing than take the order and find out later.
