Australian GST and duty on parcels from China (2026)
Parcels valued at AUD 1,000 or less are generally free of customs duty and the import processing charge at the border, but 10% GST applies — usually collected at checkout by the supplier, platform or forwarder ("redeliverer") registered for Australian GST. Shipments over AUD 1,000 require a formal import declaration: you pay any customs duty plus 10% GST plus an import processing charge.
A big advantage when buying from China: under the China–Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA), most genuinely Chinese-origin goods attract 0% customs duty, provided valid origin documentation exists. Alcohol and tobacco are exceptions — duty/excise and GST always apply regardless of value. Splitting one order into several parcels to stay under AUD 1,000 can be treated as avoidance, so declare honestly.
