US import duty on European car parts (2026)
Since 29 August 2025 the United States has suspended the $800 "de minimis" duty-free allowance for every country of origin, so a box of parts forwarded from Europe is dutiable regardless of value. The United States has no federal VAT (your state's use tax may apply after delivery); what you pay is customs duty.
Auto parts under HS heading 8708 have historically carried a low base rate (around 2.5%), but the EU "reciprocal" tariff in force in 2026 sits on top, so treat the rate as variable and check it for your part.
Two things specific to car parts. First, Some car parts are dangerous goods: airbags and seatbelt pretensioners contain a pyrotechnic charge, and oils, brake fluid, coolant, fuel-system parts, aerosols and lithium batteries are all regulated for transport.
