Australian GST, duty and the asbestos rule on car parts (2026)
Parts orders valued at AUD 1,000 or less are generally free of customs duty and the import processing charge at the border, but 10% GST applies. Over AUD 1,000 you need a formal import declaration: any customs duty plus 10% GST plus an import processing charge. Auto-parts duty depends on the HS code (commonly 5% or free); most genuinely EU-origin goods can be 0% only where a preference applies with valid origin proof.
One rule is unique to Australia and critical for car parts: asbestos is completely banned, and the Australian Border Force does test imported automotive parts (brake pads, clutches, gaskets, friction materials) — a part found to contain asbestos is seized and destroyed. Buy only from reputable EU retailers and keep documentation. Some car parts are dangerous goods: airbags and seatbelt pretensioners contain a pyrotechnic charge, and oils, brake fluid, coolant, fuel-system parts, aerosols and lithium batteries are all regulated for transport.
