US customs & import duty (EU → USA), explained
Here is the honest version most forwarders won't tell you. The old US$800 "de minimis" exemption that let small parcels enter the United States duty-free was suspended on 29 August 2025, and the suspension applies to EU shipments too. That exemption no longer exists: US import duty can now apply to your order from the very first dollar, with no value threshold below which clothing arrives free. The upside for your budget is that the US has no federal VAT or GST, so at the border you face customs duty only — not a value-added tax. Any state sales or use tax is your own obligation and is never collected by the courier. One more number to plan around: your your EU store prices already include Spain's 21% VAT, and shipping through a forwarder to an EU address does not let a private shopper reclaim that VAT (a tourist refund needs a personal export with a customs stamp, which a forwarder can't do). So budget against the .es sticker price, not a tax-free one.
The one figure we deliberately won't pin down is the exact duty rate, because in 2026 it is genuinely in flux. An IEEPA-based tariff framework was struck down in February 2026, and a temporary Section 122 surcharge now sits on top of the normal HTS apparel rates — so any single "X% on clothes" number you read online is probably already stale. VAT, honestly: the EU price includes it — and forwarding won't refund it
Maje's euro prices on maje.com/fr and eu.maje.com already include 20% French VAT (TVA). It's tempting to assume a non-EU shopper gets that 20% back, but that is not how it works for a forwarded online order. The tourist VAT refund applies only to goods a traveler physically carries out of the EU with a customs stamp on personal export — a forwarder receiving and re-shipping your parcel inside the EU cannot do that, so the VAT stays in the price. We will never promise a refund we can't deliver. The real value here isn't a tax trick: it's the price and access gap. Returns from the US: plan to avoid them
Maje's free post and in-store returns apply to deliveries within its serviced European countries — not to a parcel already forwarded overseas. In practice you return to the EU warehouse: the French/EU site gives about 14 days to notify your intent to return plus 14 days to ship back (the French site frames it as up to ~30 days from receipt), and items must be unworn with all labels and original packaging.
