Canadian duty and taxes on parcels from China (2026)
Canada applies a low CAD 20 de minimis to goods from countries other than the US and Mexico, so almost any parcel from China worth more than CAD 20 is assessed tax. You pay 5% GST plus your province's PST or HST, plus customs duty if the item is dutiable. Duty depends heavily on the product: most personal electronics (phones, laptops, tablets) are duty-free, while clothing, footwear and textiles are heavily dutiable (roughly 16%–18%).
Carriers also add a handling or brokerage fee — Canada Post charges a flat fee per dutiable item and couriers (UPS, FedEx, DHL) charge their own brokerage. Gifts from individuals abroad are exempt up to CAD 60. Note the higher CAD 40 (tax) / CAD 150 (duty) thresholds apply only to courier shipments from the US or Mexico — not from China.
